The Grain Exchange Room is located in the Mackie Building at 225 East Michigan. The Mackie Building was conceived and built by famous architect Edward Townsend Mix and is best described as "simple Italian." The five-story building was constructed from granite and limestone and trimmed with sandstone. The facades reflect a blend of High Italianate commercial style and local period iconography. The three-story Grain Exchange trading room is the awesome showcase of the interior. The vast trading room stretches to roughly 10,000 square feet, with columns dividing the room into three sections. Flanked by murals, marble columns, and gold leaf, the new trading room may have been the first trading pit in the world.
